THEME: MONEY PRESSURES

Wed Oct 12  2016  The Lesson (Kristina Grozeva, Petar Valchanov 2014 Bulgaria)

Nadezhda, a school teacher, finds herself overwhelmed by debts and resorts to drastic measures to clear them. A rare item this: a film from Bulgaria, but one which has won many awards, including in San Sebastian and Warsaw.

THEMES: CINEMA OF NEW ZEALAND ---- CHILDREN/PARENTS

Wed Dec 14 2016   Boy (Taika Waititi 2010)

Alan Wood presents his choice of film from a country not previously featured on one of our programmes. Boy lives with his grandmother and spends much time fantasising about his heroes and his absent father.  A multi award winner and a moving coming-of-age tale.

THEME: CHILDREN/PARENTS

Wed Jan 11 2017   La Gloire de Mon Pere (Yves Robert 1990)

Graham Hunt presents another French treat - this is a very popular  film based on the childhood memoirs of famous writer and producer/director Marcel Pagnol(1895-1974).  A real winter warmer this one, with lots of humour and shots of sun drenched Provence.

THEME: CHILDREN/PARENTS     DOCU SPECIAL

Wed Feb 8 2017  The Afghan Alphabet(Mohsen Makhmalbaf 2002)  & Sonita (Rokhsareh Ghaemmaghami 2015)

An unusual pairing of 2 documentaries on a single topic: Afghan refugees living in Iran.  First a film consisting of sensitively filmed but revealing interviews with children living near the Afghan/Iran border.  The second film is quite different with a focus on a spirited teenage girl whose parents want her married off, but she has another ambition - to be a rapper!

SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

Wed Mar 8 2017

The idea of showing several short films came from Kay Wood, after watching some short films in a New York cinema. Our chosen  international  films have won many awards and cover different genres, including animation, drama and romance
