Another quizzing group has now started on Thursday 26th January 2017, as we have no more chairs available at the two Friday meetings.

Full details of this new group which will be held on the 4th Thursday of the month can be found on the "Quizzing group no. 2" webpage.

This group provides the best monthly tonic ever!!

We now have TWO meetings a month for this Group

Dates for the Friday meetings of Quizzing for Fun during 2017.

January 13th & 27th,  February 10th & 24th,  March 10th & 24th,  April 14th & 28th,  May 12th & 26th,  June 9th & 23rd,  July  28th,   August 11th & 25th,  September 8th & 22nd,  October 13th & 27th,  November 10th & 24th,  December 8th  Christmas lunch.

Our knowledge must be improving, as so far in 2017 members have not come up with any howlers to report on.  It is a shame as we all enjoy a laugh but on the other hand it is better for us to be able to come up with the correct answers.     Things have changed!!

Oh dear! the silly season has started, it goes something like this:

Question. Who wrote the book, The Iliad?   Answer.     Homer

A member said " what was the other name", meaning,  The Odyssey.

One of the members said,   Simpson!!  He got a round of applause for that remark.

Question.  In the film The Godfather, what was found in the bed?

Answer.  A horses Head.   One member's answer,  "Shergar"    Good try!!

Q. How far did Apollo 11 travel on a gallon of fuel?    A.  7 inches

Meeting on 20th December 2016.

We definitely had the top of the Quizzers present this afternoon.  The top group scored 76% and even the lowest group scored 62%, and that was taking into account some member's questions that were very hard for most of us!  Well done all of you.

Wishing you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2017.

Christmas Lunch on 9th December.

An afternoon full of delicious food, riotous laughter and fun.  Many members realised that their specialised subjects could be:   Pantomime characters, Seasonal food, Carols and most of all Chocolate Brands!!  We are almost ready for the famous black chair!!

Meeting on 25th November.

A great session, with many groups scoring their highest points yet.  Members are getting the hang of producing their own questions.  We knew more about Rio de Janeiro than we thought!

Meeting on 11th November.

Another afternoon of fun and laughter.  But some of us were having a bad day! enough said;  including one member who produced a super howler,

Question,  What happened to Henry Seagrave, the land and water speed record holder, in June 1930?   Answer:   He got runover!   Wrong,   He was killed attempting a water record in the Lake District

Question;  Which character didn't like Christmas?  One member gave her husband's name as the answer!       Correct answer,  Scrooge

Question:   Which character used the phrase, "she who must be obeyed" again one member gave the name of her husband!    Correct answer,   Rumpole of the Bailey.

Meeting on 28th October

I have run out of superlatives to describe the members of this group, while learning new facts, remembering old facts, all in an atmosphere of laughter and fun. Great!  Sections featured Halloween and Christmas and a super set of questions posed by a new member.

Meeting on 14th October

Members thought it funny that I was in my Christmas T shirt, but it is time to use brain cells that had remained undisturbed since December 2015!  So 2 Christmas sections were tackled, quite successfully.

One group did really well this week scoring a 10 & a 9 in 2 rounds, one being pop music which is not a favourite of many members.  In fact every group playing today scored well over 60%; and we welcomed 2 new members.

Meeting on 23rd September

A very full house of members attended this meeting.  Three members presented their questions which were well received, with overall total scores again up on the last meeting.

This time's blunder was on the part of the quizmaster, who for some reason wanted to give out the answers before the members had heard the questions.  Oops!

Meeting on 9th September

A great gathering as usual full of laughter and a few weird answers!  We found that some members had been deprived of Nursery Rhymes when young, but never mind the rest of us put them right.  There were some excellent results this week, lots of full marks on various sections, with all groups scoring over 70%.   Well done.

Meeting on 26th August

Another full house extra quiz day to relieve the "boredom" of August and which made a change from gardening.  We are wondering that when members bring in their own section of questions, they think they are easy, but actually when the rest of the members come to answer them, they actually find them very hard.  To date we have only had one round when reasonable scores were achieved.  Cannot quite explain that yet!  It was good to see different members winning this week.

Amid peals of laughter, we had a couple of howlers:

Question,  What flower was the name of Harry Potter's mother?

Answer,  Mom!  Wrong,        Correct answer Lily

Question,  The  Matriarch is the head of which animal family?

Answer,   Meerkats!   Wrong,     Correct answer    Elephant

Explanation for wrong answer," well there is a lot of them living together as a big family, and they need to be kept under control".  That seemed reasonable to some of us.

Meeting on 18th August

To add variety and more interest to our questions, we have introduced  music rounds, which are well received by certain members.  We have also started trying out our skills out on picture quizzes, in colour which really made a difference.  Cartoon characters and Radio Times cover personalities produced some high scores.  The extra group meetings helped fill in days when members had time to spare during August.

,Meeting on 12th August

Despite the very warm weather, members turned out to flex their brains.  They were rewarded by some very high scores, some sections had 100% correct answers; and we were treated to delicious homemade cake by Barbara, thank you.

Meeting on 2nd August

The Summer improvement continues, with many groups scoring full points on some sections for the very first time.  Brilliant!

But, I'm afraid that some members are now having difficulty with limb co-ordination, judging by the answers given to the "Skeleton" section.   Now their bodies are well and truly upside down and back to front.  The best thing is that it has not affected their brain capability or their ability to laugh in all the right places!

Meeting on 22nd July

WoW!   what a turnout on such a hot day and another new member.  Obviously the sunshine feeds the brain, as groups scored their highest points ever in many of the sections.  Well done!!

But there are a few members who need the help of an "expert" to rearrange the organs in their bodies, because they think that they are located in certain "other" bodily places!!   Enough said, a great afternoon.

Please note that we will be having another quizzing afternoon on Tuesday 2nd August, we have to keep our brains in tip top condition!!

Meeting on 24th June

Super afternoon, with hardly a mention of the Referendum!

Now I realise why I don't write many sports questions, there was only 2 and1/2 members who confessed to being football fans!  So we made the drinks!  Thanks.  But despite lack of footie knowledge lots of members knew which teams were playing in the European Cup.  Well done.

We welcomed 3 new members which is great.

Extra dates have been set for quiz afternoons during August, see note above.

Meeting on 27th May.

I don't think I have heard so much laughter coming from a U3A group.  What a great afternoon!!!

From music questions to naming EC countries, to trying to answer members own questions, so that I can join in with their teams, the variety was endless.

We had a great howler;  Question section was titled, "Phrases relating to the 1950's"   Question:  The Iron ?    Answer:  Maiden!!!   Wrong.   The correct answer should have been,  The Iron Curtain.

The heavy rock band Iron Maiden were not formed until 1975!!!

The good news is that the ladies who gave this bizarre answer came 2nd overall.

Meeting on 22nd April.

A Patriotic Quizzing afternoon, with English tea and cake!

To celebrents of this week our quiz questions were all about being British, being Englishate the ev, knowing about our country, Royalty and of course our history.

I am pleased to say that the members would have passed the "Life in the UK" Citizenship exam with flying colours.

Meeting on 25th March.

Wow!! definitely improving, no howlers this week.  Thank you to members who supplied questions.

We branched out to include sections on maps and music.  A new member who attended this week is a genius in music knowledge which was a super coincidence especially for the 2 ladies whose team he joined.   Well done for being this months' winners.

Meeting on 26th February 2016

Meeting on 22nd January 2016

Into our 2nd year now, time flies when we are using our brains!!!

We welcomed 4 new members, with an abundance of brains between them!!!   Well done.

We must be getting cleverer as we didn't have any howlers this meeting  and most of us managed to answer some of the questions set by Dennis.

No bloomers from the quizzers just a few blunders from the me, I must eat more cake!!

Meeting on 25th September 2015.
