DESCRIPTION

This new group will explore different methods of decorating and manipulating textiles. The focus will be on hand and machine embroidery, printing on fabric and experimenting with ways to colour and shape fabrics.
Please note that it will not include knitting, crochet or quilting.
There will also be occasional visits to textile exhibitions and places to gather inspiration for our projects.
All abilities welcome!

This is a popular group and we have had quite a few new members. It is very difficult to run this group with too many people, so unfortunately WE NOW HAVE A WAITING LIST please contact us if you would like to go on the list and we will let you know when there is a place for you.

Yellow

Use the colour yellow as the theme for the Y pages of your alphabet sketchbook. We will also have a go at dyeing fabric with turmeric.

 

3 October

Stitching on Paper

Paper can be an interesting addition to textile work. Learn techniques for incorporating it into your work.

 

7 November

Bargello Embroidery

Learn about the history and technique then create a sample for the B pages of your alphabet sketchbook.

 

5 December

Christmas Hearts

Make a stitched felt heart to hang on your tree or give as a festive gift.

 

2 January

A Bit of Bling

Use scraps of packaging, ribbon and fabric to make your own sequins, embellishments, puffs and bows.

 

6 February

Colour Mixing

Have a go at blended stranded embroidery silks to create new shades of colour.

 

6 March

Group Visit to the Museum of Carpet (provisional)

The Museum of Carpet is a fabulous source of inspiration. We will find out more about the world of carpet and design in a private group visit.

 

 

3 April

Printing on Fabric

Explore a range of techniques for printing on fabric – using a Gelli plate, bubble-printing and making your own stamps.

 

1 May

Applique Houses

Use fabric scraps, Bondaweb and stitching to create a picture of a tiny house. This meeting may be open to others as part of Sustfest 2025 (dates are still to be confirmed).

 

5 June

Melting & Distressing Fabric

Experiments with heat guns, painted Bondaweb and Lutradur. We will also use a soldering iron to cut shapes from synthetic fabric.

 

3 July

Fun With Fly Stitch

Try out different ways with this versatile stitch.

Explore variations of blanket stitch.

Rust dyeing

Learn the technique of dyeing fabric with rusted objects. Explore other materials for colouring fabric - tea, coffee, Markal sticks and Sharpies.

Rusty nails, washers, keys, tent pegs, or other small pieces of rusty metal

Pieces of old cotton sheet for dyeing

Nature under the microscope

Use microscope images of stems, cells, etc. to inspire textile work.

Explore options for creating an inspiration board.

Look at examples of work by textile artist, Mirjam Gielen.

Have a go at distorting blanket stitch to create embroidered cells.
